Dampkring

This is the original Dampkring — the Handboogstraat shop the others were named after — now trading under the "Original" prefix to distinguish itself from the rest. It's a couple of minutes from the flower market, tucked on a side street off the Singel.

The interior is the draw as much as the menu: warm wood, low light, and a deliberately analogue feel that regulars describe as the most handsome room of any shop they visited. A scene from Ocean's Twelve was filmed here, which brings a steady flow of people who've come for the room rather than the counter. Staff have a reputation for walking first-timers through the menu without condescension, and the space cakes and edibles are potent enough that they're worth treating carefully. The drinks list — milkshakes, smoothies — gets more attention here than at most shops.
