Coffeeshops in Oost (East)

Oost isn't a neighborhood so much as a quarter of the city. It runs from the Plantage and the eastern docklands out through Oosterpark and the Indische Buurt to Watergraafsmeer, and the shops in it are scattered rather than clustered — you pick one because it's near where you are, not because you're browsing a strip.

It's the least touristed part of Amsterdam that still has coffeeshops in it, and prices reflect that. What you get is a shop serving the street it's on: small, unhurried, occasionally excellent, with no expectation that you're passing through. What you don't get is choice within walking distance, which is why the map below matters more here than on any other page in this directory.

Around them, Oost has become the best eating in the city — Javastraat and the Dappermarkt for cheap and good, the Oosterpark and Park Frankendael for somewhere to sit afterwards, and Brouwerij 't IJ under the windmill at the Funenkade if the day is going that way. The metro along Wibautstraat and trams 1, 3, 14 and 19 all put you back in the center in fifteen minutes.
