Coffeeshops in Haarlem

Haarlem is the capital of North Holland and the best-kept secret in Dutch coffeeshop culture — a fifteen-minute train ride from Amsterdam Centraal, with a cluster of shops serving a city of 165,000 rather than twenty million annual visitors.

The difference is immediate. Shops here run on regulars, which means staff who'll talk you through a menu instead of moving the queue along, prices set for people who come back next week, and seating you can actually sit in. The center is compact and walkable: most shops are within ten minutes of the Grote Markt, and you can reach any of them on foot from the station.

Tourists are welcome. Haarlem has never applied the residency requirement, so the rules are the same as Amsterdam's — 18 or over, valid ID, 5 grams a day. The city is also considerably more relaxed about where you smoke, with none of the marked prohibition zones you'll find around De Wallen and Dam Square, though the usual courtesy applies around terraces and families.
