Coffeeshops in De Pijp
De Pijp is where people who live in Amsterdam actually go. It's a dense grid of 19th-century streets just south of the canal belt, built as workers' housing and now the busiest eating and drinking neighborhood in the city — the Albert Cuypmarkt runs six days a week down its spine, Sarphatipark sits in the middle of it, and the Heineken brewery marks the northern edge.
The coffeeshops here reflect that. They serve a neighborhood rather than a tourist flow, which means smaller rooms, longer opening histories, and staff who assume you might come back on Thursday. It's the cluster to pick if the shops in the center have felt like a conveyor belt.
Getting here is easier than most visitors expect. The Noord/Zuidlijn metro puts De Pijp station five minutes from Centraal, and trams 4, 12 and 24 run down Ferdinand Bolstraat. From the square in the middle of the district you're ten minutes' walk from Museumplein and fifteen from Vondelpark.
For a full day: market in the morning, lunch on the Albert Cuypstraat, then a shop and an hour in Sarphatipark. It's the only neighborhood in this directory where that itinerary works without a train.
