Coffeeshops in Jordaan
The Jordaan is the pocket of narrow streets west of the Prinsengracht, built in the 17th century for the people who dug the canals and now one of the most sought-after places to live in the Netherlands. It's all brown cafés, hidden courtyards, art galleries in former workshops, and streets named after flowers.
There aren't many coffeeshops here, and that's the point. The ones that exist are small, have been in place for decades, and feel closer to a neighborhood café than a dispensary — a handful of tables, a regular at the counter, no queue and no upsell. If the Old Center felt like being processed, this is the correction.
Come on a Saturday if you can. The Noordermarkt runs a farmers' market in the morning and the Lindengracht market fills the street beside it, which makes for the best half-day in Amsterdam that doesn't involve a museum queue. The Westerkerk tower is the landmark to navigate by, and Centraal is a fifteen-minute walk or a short ride on tram 13 or 17.
