Coffeeshops in Nieuwmarkt

Nieuwmarkt is the square with the Waag on it — the 15th-century city gate turned weigh house — and it marks the eastern edge of Amsterdam's medieval center. It sits two minutes' walk from De Wallen and feels like a different city. Terraces ring the square, people who live here use it, and the coffeeshops nearby run on regulars rather than footfall.

This is the sweet spot for most visitors staying in the center. You're still inside the old town, still five minutes from Centraal, but the shops along the Zeedijk, Kloveniersburgwal and the streets running off the square have room to sit down, staff who'll answer questions, and prices that haven't been set for people who'll never come back. Chinatown starts at the Zeedijk, so it's also the best food in walking distance of any coffeeshop cluster in Amsterdam.

One thing to get right: Nieuwmarkt is inside the public smoking ban. The 2023 prohibition covers this square along with De Wallen, Dam and Damrak, and the €100 fine applies here exactly as it does three streets west. Getting away from the crowds doesn't get you away from the rule. Smoke inside the shop, or walk further east past the marked zone — the signage on the bridges tells you where you are.
