Coffeeshops in Zuid

Zuid is the wealthy south of the city: the museum quarter and the Concertgebouw, the Apollobuurt's 1920s villas, the Rivierenbuurt, and the Zuidas towers out by the ring. It's also the part of Amsterdam with the fewest coffeeshops per resident, and that catches people out — you can stand on Museumplein, surrounded by more visitors than anywhere else in the country, and have nothing within a comfortable walk.

The handful that exist here sit at the edges of the district rather than in the middle of it, and the map below shows exactly where. If none of them are convenient, the honest answer is to leave Zuid: De Pijp is about ten minutes east of Museumplein and has a proper cluster, Leidseplein is ten minutes north for anything open late, and Oud-West and De Baarsjes cover the northern and western sides of Vondelpark.

Worth knowing if you're out here for the RAI or the Zuidas — the business end of the district has hotels but almost nothing else after seven in the evening. Buy before you head back.
