Coffeeshops in Leidseplein

Leidseplein is where Amsterdam goes out. The square sits at the southern end of the canal belt, ringed by the Stadsschouwburg, Paradiso and Melkweg, and it runs later than anywhere else in the center. The coffeeshops here run later too — several of the biggest names in the city are on or just off the square, and they're built for volume: multiple floors, long counters, and staff who've seen everything.

That scale cuts both ways. If you want a quiet corner and a conversation about strains, this isn't the cluster — try Nieuwmarkt or the Jordaan. If you want somewhere open at midnight, somewhere that can seat six people who've just come out of a show, or somewhere you can find without a map at 1am, Leidseplein is the answer. The side streets running off the square, particularly toward the Prinsengracht, have smaller places that split the difference.

It's also a good base for the rest of the day. Vondelpark is a five-minute walk west and Museumplein about ten minutes south, which makes this the natural cluster if your day is going to end somewhere green rather than back at Centraal.
