Coffeeshops in Utrecht
Utrecht is the smallest mainland province in the Netherlands and sits in the middle of the country, which makes it the easiest alternative to Amsterdam that doesn't feel like a compromise. Utrecht city is twenty-five minutes from Amsterdam Centraal by train — the fourth-largest city in the country, built around the Domtoren and the Oudegracht with its sunken wharf cellars, and dominated by the largest student population in the Netherlands. Its coffeeshops are priced and stocked for those students rather than for visitors.
Coverage across the province is uneven. Utrecht city holds most of the shops, Amersfoort has a smaller cluster of its own, and a number of municipalities in the east and south of the province operate a zero policy and have none at all. The town pages below show where they actually are.
Visitors can buy on the same terms as anywhere north of the border region: 18 or over, valid ID, five grams a day. Utrecht is one of the control municipalities in the national closed-chain cannabis experiment rather than a participant, so its shops operate under the standard tolerance rules — worth knowing if you've read about regulated supply and wondered where it applies.
