Coffeeshops in De Baarsjes
De Baarsjes sits between Oud-West and the ring road, on the far side of the Kostverlorenvaart. It's one of the most densely populated parts of the Netherlands and one of the best examples of Amsterdam School architecture outside the Spaarndammerbuurt — Berlage laid out the plan, and Mercatorplein still anchors it.
The shops here run along Jan Evertsenstraat, the Admiraal de Ruijterweg and the Hoofdweg, which makes this a genuine cluster rather than the scattered handful you get further out. Between them sit Turkish bakeries, old brown cafés and newer places with pavement tables, in the mix you'd expect from a neighbourhood that's changed a lot in fifteen years and hasn't finished.
Get a bike. This is the neighbourhood where it changes everything: Vondelpark in ten minutes, the Jordaan in twelve, the center in under twenty, all of it flat and most of it along water. On a tram the same trips feel like a commute, which is why De Baarsjes reads as remote to visitors and central to the people who live here. Rembrandtpark is on the western edge if you want green closer than the Vondel.
